There repels were all lost during the day. In the case of the "Raleigh" soon rock, a buoy placed to mark it would be stolen and a Deacon on it is impracticable as the rock is of pinnacle form. The "Apistance rock was not marked on the Chart, a buoy on it would have saved her, but it is not usual for large saife to approach so near to the shore she did. A buoy placed here would most likely be removed by the natives and I do not think one so near necessary, the rock being blank.
The "Fearnought" was lost through the imprudence of the Master leaving here in a fog.
The approaches to Hongkong are singularly free from any hidden dangers. The islands in the vicinity are well defined and with one or two exceptions steep to, so that only very ordinary caution is necessary in navigating the adjacent waters. Yathong Stock is the only danger not recognisable from a distance but I do not know of any vessel having touched it. A conical Tower, painted in alternate red and white stripes, on this rock would make it more conspicuous and I think it advisable this should be done.
